The Super Bowl of Marketing Showcases the Best of the Ad Game

Every year Super Bowl hype grows bigger. The same goes for the advertising.

This year, marketers treated their Super Bowl commercials like movies with previews of the ads prior to the game. Advertising about the advertising.

With the price of a 30-second spot more than $4 million, it makes sense for companies to maximize their investment. They create a buzz through social media and drive viewers to YouTube to watch their Super Bowl ad previews. Instead of a 30-second commercial during the game, the company benefits from a week long campaign.

Plus, it gives marketing people something to do prior to the game. Thanks. We needed that.

Here’s my…ahem…(deep breath)…Top 5 Super Bowl Teaser Ads Running as Previews for Commercials that will Actually Air During the Game:

  • Surprise! Arnold is Back. Bud Light features former California Governor and Terminator star Arnold Schwarzenegger saying and doing very little. But you’ll still watch and wonder what’s next. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PYiasdBC7k
  • Twerking M&M Shot. A dancing M&M is hit with a tranquilizer during the teaser. You have to watch the in game ad to find out what happens next. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNr1a-k3bwk
  • Sorry, SodaStream. Scarlett Johansson is this year’s SodaStream star but just like last year the company’s first commercial submission was banned for ending with “Sorry, Coke and Pepsi.” Check out the uncut version. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zxq4ziu-wrI
  • Full House Reunion. Dannon Oikos’ teaser shows spokesperson John Stamos  along with Full House costars Bob Saget and Dave Coulier. You have to watch the game ad to find out if they plan on making a comeback. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zgQX2v6V1-c
  • Dad’s Sixth Sense.  As a kid grows up, his Dad saves him from falling down  as a 3 year old, wrecking his bike as a kid and crashing into a grill trying to catch a football as a teen.  Then the Hyundai Genesis’ radar-based emergency brake saves the now 16-year old from colliding with a car after he gets distracted by a girl. “Remember when only Dad could save the day?” Yeah, I do. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGr9t5Wfrv0

Teasers, previews, trailers for the commercials. Integrating ads, promotions and social media to maximize ROI. Making the message about them–the target audiences.

It’s the Super Bowl of Marketing. Hope you enjoy it…and the game too.
