How Soon is Now—The Smiths

Why do so many people keep their ideas to themselves and then after a decision is made let their frustrations bottle up inside?
I am the son
and the heir
Of a shyness that is criminally vulgar
Others push back when asked to try a new process, put off difficult work in the hope that it goes away or act like they really just don’t care.
I am the son and heir Of nothing in particular
When someone provides constructive feedback, the response is not to look in the mirror and try to improve. Instead, people become defensive and resent the messenger.
You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way
And people want what they want, ASAP! Change that benefits them or meets their needs never seems to happen fast enough, if at all.
When you say it’s gonna happen now,
When exactly do you mean?
See I’ve already waited too long
Did you clearly explain how your idea or request impacts others and benefits the organization? When the roles are reversed, are you resistant to change or willing to try new ideas and processes? Are you focused on self-improvement or just going through the motions?
Set short and long term goals and develop action plans to achieve them. You will gain confidence and build momentum from hitting milestones. As you complete projects from beginning to end, your ability to take the long view and be patient will also improve. Strive to enhance communication with your boss, peers and subordinates. You will develop stronger relationships and see an increase in productivity.
And all my hope is gone
We can all be a bit melodramatic at times. Instead of over emphasizing the negatives, be proactive and honestly assess your situation. You’ll probably find there’s a lot more good than bad. And that you need to make a conscious effort to change in order to achieve ongoing personal and professional growth.
